Note
There is some confusion as to when the Tiedeken family arrived in

the U.S. Also, family tradition has named one of the Tiedekens to migrate to our country as Peter. I have no record for Peter.

Uncle Jack told Jay that Richard and Peter Tiedeken came to the

U.S. in 1846. Uncle Jack also told Jay that Richard settled in PA, while Peter moved to New Jersey.

Herbert Tiedeken, III's paper on the family history states that

Francis and Peter arrived in 1848.

The official records collected thus far show three Tiedekens,

Diedrich, Henry and Francis petitioning for citizenship in the years 1849, 1847 and 1850 respectively. The 1850 Census shows the 3 brothers living at Henry's house.

The Philadelphia Directory for 1850 list Richard and Henry Tiedeken

as blacksmiths at 2 Flower Court. In my notes, I wrote in ( ) next to this address: (North from 3 Torr's court).

The 1880 Directory still listed Richard as a blacksmith and his

residence as 911 Torr. His son Theodore H. was listed at the address as a constable. 1870 Census: Tiedeken, Richard 50 Catherine 50 Theodore 20 Frank 15 (sp) Leizzie 15 (may be Lizzie) William 10 John 10 Harry 5 Kate 5 Alfred 1

The research done for Katherine Crotty Riddell's estate

distribution lists a Mary E. This may be Lizzie if her middle name was Elizabeth. Also, Harry may be Henry. There is no Peter in the Census record, and Alfred is not listed in the Riddell research (There is an Albert in later directories.)

The 1870 Phila. Directory list Richard and Theodore as blacksmiths.

By 1890, Catherine is listed as a widow.

The 1850 Census list Diedrich living with Henry and Francis. He

was listed as 30 years old and was a blacksmith. There was no Peter listed.

Received on 11 Oct 1994 a letter from Aunt Mary. She found info on

Richard's death at 13 and Locust Sts. in Phila. She sent a copy (very unreadable) of the Death Registration and the obit in the Public Ledger (Newspaper). The reference number for the Death Registration microfilm is XR 895-39, Jan - Dec. 1886, Page 185. The newspaper was Oct 18th, 1886, Page 2, column 4. The cause of death in the Registry is not legible (Aunt Mary stated that it may be Heredity). Richard was 67 years old and died at his home - 911 Torr Street. He was buried at Saint Peter's Roman Catholic Church's cemetery. Aunt Mary says this is at Tioga and Belgrade in Phila. I believe Aunt Mary said that the Church record has been lost. I was at the cemetery in May 1995 and could not find Richard and his wife, but did see his brother's grave. (July 1995) The text of the obituary follows:

TIEDEKEN, On the 15th instant. RICHARD TIEDEKEN. In the 67th year

of his age. The relatives and friends of the family are respectfully invited to attend the funeral, on Tuesday morning at 8 o'clock, from his late residence, 911 Torr Street. Services at St. Peter's Church at 9 o'clock, sharp.
